This week, the federal government announced will invest an additional $1.18 Billion USD toward lifting ongoing boiled water advisories in First Nations communities.
There was also additional coverage to last week’s news that Australian Wyloo Metals from the Australian private investment group, Tattarang, has bought a major stake in Norton Resources. Wyloo bought out all of Resource Capital Fund’s and its affiliates interests. Meanwhile, Neskantaga community members continue to live in a Thunder Bay hotel, evacuated almost two months ago due to contamination of their drinking water.
Three cabinet members, including Energy, Northern Development and Mines Minister Greg Rickford, along with MPP Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, hosted a virtual event to present their draft transportation plan for northeastern Ontario. It remains unclear if the Huron Central rail line that received a Queen’s Park subsidy in 2018 of $980,000, will be repeated, despite Rickford’s assertion that the line is considered to be ‘critical infrastructure’ for the region.
Concerned about Bill 197 and right of Indigenous community to be consulted and give consent on proposed mining projects impacting their territory, a couple from Attawapiskat set out on a 15 day canoe trip to “make their presence and use of the land and waters known, and send a message to political leaders involved in the Ring of Fire.”

‘They’re really struggling’: Inside the Neskantaga First Nation water crisis
The community was promised an upgraded treatment plant by 2018. Two years later, its members have once again been evacuated. Why doesn’t Neskantaga have clean water yet?
“When Chris Moonias woke up thirsty at 4 a.m. in his room at the Victoria Inn on a recent fall day, the first thing he did was look for a bottle of water. Though tap water was available in the bathroom, the Neskantaga First Nation chief grabbed his key, left his room, and walked to a nearby boardroom to find a bottle. He couldn’t bring himself to use the tap.
His community has been under a 25-year boil-water advisory, Canada’s longest, and a distrust of running water, he says, has become pervasive among its members: “That’s the continued trauma. I’m not the only one that goes through this. If you go room to room here at the hotel, I guarantee you 100 per cent of those rooms have cases of bottled water.”” Read more here…
