Attawapiskat, Fort Albany, and Neskantaga First Nations in the James Bay lowlands have declared a moratorium on development to the Ring of Fire mining area and threatening are threatening legal action to preserve their lands and rights. They cite international laws including the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and its requirements for free, prior and informed consent. You can read their demand for a moratorium below. In other news, a new policy institute was created for development in northeastern Ontario. The Abitibi Institute was launched last week to promote development in northereastern Ontario which they considered untapped potential. Meanwhile many First Nations are still under boil water advisory one year into the pandemic.

Attawapiskat, Fort Albany, and Neskantaga First Nations in the James Bay lowlands have declared a moratorium on any development in or to facilitate access to the Ring of Fire mining area.
