This week the Land Defense Alliance, made up of five First Nations communities- Neskantaga, Muskrat Dam First Nations, Wapekeka, Asubpeeschoseewagong Anishinabek (Grassy Narrows), and Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (Big Trout Lake), travelled to Toronto and asked Premier Ford to sign a declaration of respect for their refusal of mining on their lands. Ford refused to meet with the Land Alliance, offering a meeting with Greg Rickford instead. The group refused this meeting, asking to meet with Ford as he sets the policy agenda. The group set up a table outside of Queen’s park on Sept 27th waiting on a meeting. The media also highlighted a group of conservationists arguing that it makes more sense to mine where there is already infrastructure. Completely sidestepping the question of consent, the CEO of Ring of Fire Metals says that they will mine in ways that are ‘minimally impactful’ on the peatlands. Wyloo Metals has once again rebranded and all of its mines will be under the name Wyloo.
